CRYSTALENS® and REZOOM
As we age, the natural lens in the eye becomes less flexible, diminishing the eye's ability to switch its focus from one focal plane to another, a condition called presbyopia. Aging eyes may also develop cataracts, causing the lens to become cloudy or dark.
In order to help presbyopia or cataract patients reclaim their ability to see at far, intermediate and close ranges, we offer two advanced intraocular lens technologies - Crystalens® and ReZoom. Each of these implantable lenses uses a slightly different optical design to help you achieve your goal of clear vision at all distances. Dr. Harman will determine which lens is best suited for your visual needs.
Crystalens®
Crystalens® is an accommodating lens designed to mimic the eye's natural ability to focus at all distances. Unlike fixed lenses, Crystalens® has a unique hinge design that allows the lens to focus on objects at varying distances using the eye's natural muscle.

ReZoom
ReZoom is a fixed multi-focal lens that distributes light over five optic zones, giving patients a range of vision at a variety of distances. The lens itself doesn't move, but rather is divided into different visual zones designed for different light and focal distances.

How do I know if I'm a candidate?
We will perform a comprehensive
and dilated eye exam with presurgical testing to make sure your
eyes are healthy and to confirm that you are a candidate for the
procedure. If you are a contact
lens wearer, you will need to keep your contact lenses out prior
to your exam. We will review all of your testing and exam results
with you and if you are a candidate and wish to proceed, you may
pick a date for your procedure and complete the informed
consents.
What is the procedure like?
The Crystalens® and ReZoom procedures are extremely safe, requiring only a small incision near the cornea that will heal on its own after placement of the lens implant. Surgery is performed under local anesthesia to numb the eye, so there is minimal discomfort during the surgery. We will also give you medicine to help you relax. You will not be put to sleep or given general anesthesia.
Are both eyes done at the same time?
Dr. Harman performs surgery one eye at a time. Once
the first eye is healed, and you are happy with your visual outcome,
surgery can be performed for your other eye (usually 2-3
weeks later).
Where are Crystalens® and ReZoom surgeries performed?
Dr. Harman performs Crystalens® and ReZoom surgery at our surgical
center, Eye Surgery
Center of Central Virginia, which is located at 1834 Graves Mill Road, Forest, VA 24551. Dr. Harman is one of the most experienced eye surgeons in Virginia. He has performed over 20,000 intraocular surgeries since 1988.
What will my vision be like after surgery?
Your distance vision will usually be very good within a day or two of surgery. However, your near and intermediate vision may be somewhat blurred right after surgery. You may need to wear reading glasses to help you read during this recovery period. After about two weeks, you should notice an improvement in your near and intermediate vision.
Are there any restrictions after surgery?
Most patients are able to resume their normal activities
the day after surgery and can drive to the office for their postoperative
appointment. The most important "don't" after surgery
is that you do not rub your eye. We also ask that ladies avoid
the use of eye makeup for two weeks.
